Our tallow comes from a single fifth-generation family farm on the mountain across from our studio, above the Rondout Reservoir. The family raises Angus cattle on rotationally grazed pasture and has spent decades protecting the streams and watershed that run through their land. We use only the suet, the dense fat from around the kidneys, traditionally prized for its purity and firm texture. We render it twice in small batches, which leaves a clean, mild tallow that is smooth to the touch and ready to carry the botanicals in the balm.

Named for the steadiest sign of the zodiac, Taurus is a tallow balm for skin that needs more than a cream: a rich, protective layer that melts on contact. On the face, it is the final step in a skincare routine. Pressed over Aeternum, it seals the oil in, and in the evening it keeps skin nourished through the night. It earns its place in every season too, for winter-chapped cheeks, gardeners’ hands, and skin left dry and flaking after a day in the sun.

Tallow is one of skincare’s oldest materials, and for good reason. Its fats closely resemble the lipids skin makes on its own, and it carries naturally occurring vitamins A, D, E, and K. Almond oil steeped with St. John’s wort and yarrow, two herbs long used to calm and restore skin, softens the balm. Rosehip seed oil adds essential fatty acids and natural vitamin A, and jojoba gives it slip so it spreads easily. A house blend of pure essential oils, led by cedarwood and vetiver, gives it a warm, smoky, earthy scent.
Firm in the jar, it softens at the touch of warm skin and absorbs into a velvety finish with no greasy residue. A little goes a long way.

Taurus comes in a screen-printed European flint glass jar. Each jar comes in a box letterpressed locally on Italian cotton-blend paper. Between uses, keep the jar in its box, away from direct light and heat, to protect the balm inside.
